세계보건기구 (WHO)는 전세계에서 10억여명이 훈련받은 의료인력의 부족으로 인해 기본적인 의료혜택을 받지 못하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
이 기구는 세계보건의 날에 맞춰 7일 발표한 건강보고서에서 전세계 56개국이 심각한 의료인력 부족으로 어려움을 겪고 있으며, 이 중 36개국은 사하라 남부의 아프리카 국가들이라고 밝혔습니다.
보고서는 이들 빈곤국의 에이즈와 조류독감 및 다른 질병 퇴치 노력을 지원하려면 4백만명의 의료인력이 필요한 것으로 추산했습니다.
보고서는 또 빈곤국들에서는 훈련을 받고 있는 의료인력이 충분하지 않으며 그나마 훈련받은 인력이 더 나은 급여와 근로조건을 찾아 다른 나라로 이동하는 사례가 잦다고 밝혔습니다.

The World Health Organization says more than one billion people worldwide do not have access to basic health care due to a shortage of trained medical workers.
The Geneva-based U.N. body's 2006 World Health Report says there is a serious shortage of health care workers in 57 countries -- 36 of them in sub-Saharan Africa.
It estimates four million health workers are needed to fill the gap in the poorest countries as they battle HIV / AIDS, bird flu and other diseases.
The report says not enough medical workers are being trained in poor countries, and those who are trained often move to more prosperous nations where salaries and working conditions are better.
The report was issued today (Friday) to coincide with World Health Day.
