일본 이와쿠니시 주민들은 12일 현지의 미군기지를 대폭 확장하려는 정부 계획에 대해 주민투표를 실시했습니다. 이번 투표는 법적인 구속력은 갖지 않습니다.

Residents of the Japanese city of Iwakuni are voting in a non-binding referendum on a government plan that would greatly enlarge the U.S. military base there.
About 85 thousand people are eligible to cast ballots today (Sunday) on whether they support or oppose the plan to move more U.S. service personnel and jets to the base. Opponents say the plan would add noise and crime to the community.
Results of the referendum are to be announced a few hours after voting closes (at 1100 UTC). Whatever the outcome, the central government still has the final say in the planned relocation.
The government plan calls for the transfer to Iwakuni of 57 carrier-based jets (from the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier) and about 16 hundred U.S. troops from Atsugi naval base near Tokyo. Iwakuni is already home to more than three thousand U.S. Marines and 57 U.S. aircraft.
