The Dubai company causing a political storm over its bid to manage some U.S. ports says it will sell off its U.S. operations to an American owner. Dubai Ports World's chief operating officer, Edward Bilkey, made the announcement Thursday.
The company's decision came after the Republican-led House of Representatives and Senate signaled they were prepared to vote to block the deal on grounds of national security -- despite threats from President Bush to veto any such measure. A leading critic of the deal, Democrat Charles Schumer, welcomed the news.
But he added he wants assurances that Dubai Ports World has really backed out of the agreement. A majority of Americans surveyed oppose the deal, saying they are wary of an Arab company managing U.S. ports, a consideration in this election year.
