유엔은 민주주의 강화를 위해 노력하고 있는 전세계 개발 도상국들을 지원하기 위한 민주주의 진흥 기금을 출범시켰습니다.
유엔 민주 기금은, 6일, 코피 아난 유엔 사무총장이 , 17개 회원국으로 구성된 자문위원회 회의를 주재하는 가운데 공식 출범했습니다. 아난 사무총장 대변인은, 민주 자금은 또 민간 사회에 힘을 불어넣고 법치를 강화하기 위한 사업에도 재정적 지원을 하게 될 것이라고 말했습니다.
민주 기금은 대부분 호주와 인도, 미국에서 기부한 3천 2백만달러의 초기 예산으로 실행에 들어갔습니다. 중동 4개국은 8백만 달러의 기금 출연을 약속하고 있습니다. 유엔 민주기금은 지난해 7월 처음 설립됐습니다.

The United Nations has launched a democracy promotion fund aimed at helping developing nations strengthen democratic institutions. The Democracy Fund began operating Monday with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan chairing a meeting of its 17-member advisory board.
A spokesman for Mr. Annan said the fund also will finance projects to empower civil society and strengthen the rule of law. The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, says the fund marks a rare opportunity to start afresh with projects that produce tangible results in advancing democracy.
Germany's U.N. ambassador (Gunther Pleuger) and Benin's envoy (Simon B. Idohou) voiced similar sentiment. The fund has an initial operating budget of 32-million-dollars, most of it donated by Australia, India and the United States. Qatar has pledged another eight million dollars. The fund was established last July.
