타이완의 천수이벤 총통은 타이완을 방문중인 한 미국 국회의원에게, 중국과의 재통합에 관한 지침서를 폐기하기 위한 자신의 구상을 계속 추진할 것이라고 말했습니다.
천수이벤 타이완 총통은 22일 미국 코네티컷 주 출신 로버트 R시몬스 공화당 의원에게 , 타이완 국가 통일 위원회및 15년된 중국과의 재통합 지침서는 불합리한 시대의 불합리한 산물이라고 말했습니다. 천수이벤 총통은 지난달 중국과의 재통합 지침서와 위원회의 폐기를 검토할 시기라고 처음 말한 바 있습니다.
위원회는 천수이벤 총통이 지난 2천년 , 5년간의 국민당 정부시대를 마감시키고 취임한 이래 그 기능이 상실된채 명목만 유지해왔습니다.

Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian has told a visiting U.S. Congressman that he will continue with his plan to abolish guidelines on reunification with China. Mr. Chen told U.S. Congressman Robert R. Simmons (Republican, Connecticut) today (Wednesday) that Taiwan's National Unification Council and 15-year-old guidelines on unification with China are absurd products of an absurd era.
The Taiwan leader first said it was time to consider scrapping the guidelines and the council last month. The council has been dormant since Chen took office in 2000 and ended five decades of Nationalist Party rule.
China has vowed to attack Taiwan if the island formally declares statehood. The two sides split at the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949 when the defeated Nationalists fled into exile on the island.
