The U.S. military has announced it will hold three large naval exercises in the Pacific Ocean this year, joined by military units from Japan, South Korea, Australia and other nations.
The commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet (Admiral Gary Roughead) says four American aircraft carriers will take part in the maneuvers between June and August -- the first time in more than a decade that four of the big U.S. warships have operated in the Pacific Ocean at the same time.
Pentagon officials say the concentration of forces could be the largest in the region since U.S. involvement in Vietnam ended over 30 years ago.
