Reporters Without Borders is calling on China to immediately release three journalists sentenced to prison this week for extortion and illegally operating a magazine.
The media rights group says the prison terms serve as a reminder that the Chinese government is targeting journalists who are trying to break out of what the group calls "the strait-jacket of political control."
On Tuesday, a district court in the southeastern province of Zhejiang sentenced the journalists to between one and ten years in prison.
The journalists had published articles in the magazine, New China Youth, on land disputes between rural residents and local authorities in Zhejiang province .
In its annual press freedom report released earlier this month, Reporters Without Borders said China leads the world in jailing journalists and cyber activists.
