국제인권단체 [휴먼 라이츠 워치]는 지난 해에 남아시아의 인권이 심각하게 침해됐으며, 일부 정부들이 최악의 인권침해를 범했다고 밝혔습니다.
과거에 남아시아의 일부 국가들은 일부 서방 국가들처럼 선진국가가 아니기 때문에 세계적인 인권 요구조건을 준수하기를 기대하는 것은 공정하지 못하다고 주장해 왔습니다.
[휴먼 라이츠 워치]는 네팔과 방글라데시, 스리랑카가 인권침해를 하면서 이같은 주장을 내세우고 있다고 말했습니다. 이 보고서는 파키스탄과 인도, 네팔이 반군을 진압하기 위한 노력에서 인권을 위반하고 있다고 비난했습니다.
중앙아시아에서는 우즈베키스탄의 비참한 상황이 지난 해 5월 정부가 안디잔에서 반정부 시위자들을 학살한 이후 더욱 악화됐다고 말했습니다.

US-based Human Rights Watch says respect for human rights in South Asia has seriously eroded over the past year, with some governments committing the worst abuses.
Some of the South Asian nations have said in the past it is not fair to expect them to uphold all global human rights requirements because they are not as developed as some Western nations. Human Rights Watch says Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are using that argument to commit abuses.
The report accuses Pakistan, India and Nepal of violating human rights in efforts to crush rebellions, while it says an increasingly violent insurgency in Afghanistan hampered desperately needed development efforts.
The group says India also played a "positive role" by suspending most military aid to Nepal in retaliation for King Gyanendra's power grab last February.
On Central Asia, Human Rights Watch says the already disastrous situation in Uzbekistan worsened after a government massacre of opposition demonstrators in Andijan in May.
