U.S. health officials say the rate of reported HIV cases among African-Americans has dropped by five percent each year since 2001, but warns it remains disproportionately high.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a four-year study of cases in 33 states today (Thursday). The findings, while not fully representative, also indicate a slight drop in overall new cases of the HIV infection in America.
The drop in African-American infection rates appears to come in large part to a decline of HIV transmission among illegal drug users. The C-D-C says this suggests prevention efforts, including clean needle programs, have helped stem the spread of the virus that causes AIDS.
At the same time, the report notes the rate of HIV diagnosis is still more than eight times higher among blacks than whites. It urges greater prevention efforts focusing on African-Americans.
