Security forces across India are on high alert (today/Sunday), one day after bomb blasts in the capital, New Delhi, killed at least 61 people and injured more than 150.
Authorities in New Delhi declared a state of emergency, ordered all market places to stay closed, and appealed to citizens to stay away from public areas as the search for those responsible continues.
The bombs exploded within minutes of each other late Saturday -- one on a bus, and two in market places crowded with shoppers preparing for Diwali, the annual Hindu festival of lights.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh denounced the bombings as terrorist acts and called an emergency cabinet meeting to review security across the country.
Home Minister Shivraj Patil said after the meeting the authorities have lots of information and that the investigation was going well.
A little known group calling itself Inquilab (Revolution) contacted a news agency in Indian Kashmir to claim responsibility. The group is tied to the Pakistan-based Kashmiri terrorist group, Lashkar-e-Taiba.
