올해의 노벨 평화상은, 국제 원자력 기구, IAEA와 모하메드 엘바라데이 IAEA 사무총장에게 공동으로 돌아갔습니다.
노르웨이의 노벨 위원회는 7일, 오슬로에서 “핵 에너지의 군사적 목적을 위한 이용을 막고, 평화적 목적으로 사용되도록 핵 에너지의 안전을 보장한 공로”로 IAEA와 엘바라데이 사무총장을 노벨 평화상의 공동 수상자로 선정했다고 밝혔습니다.
오스트리아 빈에 소재한 IAEA 본부에서 멜리사 플레밍 대변인은 IAEA는 이 소식에 기쁘고 지극히 자랑스러워한다 말했습니다.
여러 세계 지도자들과 코피 아난 유엔 사무 총장을 비롯한 외교관들은 IAEA와 엘바라데이 사무 총장이 노벨 평화상을 수상한 것과 세계 안전을 위한 그들의 현 노력을 치하했습니다. 이집트 외교관 출신인 엘바라데이 사무총장은 1997년부터 IAEA를 이끌어오고있습니다.

The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the International Atomic Energy Agency and its director, Mohamed ElBaradei.The Norwegian Nobel Committee made the announcement today (Friday) in Oslo. It said the U.N. agency and Mr. ElBaradei will share the award equally "for their efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes and to ensure the safety of atomic energy when it is used for peaceful purposes."
At the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, spokeswoman Melissa Flemming said the agency is elated and extremely proud to win the award.
Several world leaders and diplomats, including U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, praised the IAEA and Mr. ElBaradei for winning the prize, and for their ongoing efforts to make the world safe.
Mr. ElBaradei, who is a former Egyptian diplomat, has headed the IAEA since 1997.
The prestigious Nobel Peace prize is worth one-point-three million dollars. This year's award comes 60 years after the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
