이스라엘 보안군은 3일 저녁 시작되는 유대교 신년 명절 축하 행사들을 앞두고 경계를 강화했습니다. 이 경계령은 이스라엘 관광객들에게 이집트의 시나이 반도에 있는 휴양지들을 방문하지 말라는, 별도의 금지령과 같은 시기에 내려졌습니다.

마크 레게브 이스라엘 외무부 대변인은, 시나이반도에 대한 테러 위협은 이스라엘이 가자지구에서 일방적으로 철수한 이후 증가했다고 밝혔습니다.
레게브 대변인은, 팔레스타인 가자지구와 이집트 시나이반도의 경계는 불행스럽게도 침투하기가 용이하기 때문에 이스라엘은 하마스나 이슬라믹 지하드같은, 가자 지구에 있는 과격 단체들을 가장 우려하고 있다고 말했습니다. 레게브 대변인은 그들 집단은 가자지구와 이스라엘 접경 지대의 특성상 이스라엘에 침투할 수는 없지만 가자지구와 시나이반도 경계는 쉽게 넘을 수 있기 때문에 시나이반도에 있는 이스라엘인들을 공격할 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.
작년 유대인 명절기간 동안에는 시나이반도 휴양지 타바의 고급 호텔과 주변 해안 지역에 대한 잇단 폭탄 테러 공격으로 30여 명이 목숨을 잃었습니다. 지난 7월에도 역시 시나이 반도에 있는 휴양지, 샴엘쉬크에 대한 테러공격으로 최소한 64 명이 사망했습니다.
이집트 당국은 시나이 반도 폭탄테러와 연관이 있는 것으로 보이는 용의자 수 백 명을 체포했으며 이스라엘 관리들은 이집트 보안군이 최근 테러 위협에 대처하고 있다고 말했습니다. 올해 유대교 명절 기간 동안에는 3만여 명의 이스라엘인들이 시나이 반도를 방문할 것으로 추산됐습니다.

INTRO: Israeli security forces have gone on alert ahead of the Jewish New Year's celebrations, which begin Monday evening. VOA's Jim Teeple reports from Jerusalem, the alert coincides with a separate warning to Israeli tourists not to travel to resorts in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.
TEXT: Israeli police say a general security alert will remain in effect throughout the month of October, as Israelis mark major Jewish holidays. Police officials say the alert is focused on areas surrounding Jerusalem, but the military has closed off the entire West Bank and Gaza strip, as well -- something it does routinely during the Jewish high holidays to prevent attacks by Palestinian militants.
Meanwhile, anti-terrorism officials have issued an unusually stern warning to Israelis not to visit the resorts in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, saying they have specific information that extremist groups plan to kidnap Israelis who travel there. Foreign ministry spokesman Mark Regev says the threat of terrorist incidents in the Sinai has increased since Israel's unilateral withdrawal from Gaza.

More than 30 people were killed in Egypt, last year, during the Jewish holiday season, in a series of bombings at a luxury hotel in the Sinai resort, Taba, and at a nearby beach camp. In July, at least 64 people were killed in a terrorist attack in the Sinai resort, Sharm el-Sheik.
Egyptian authorities have arrested hundreds of individuals allegedly connected to both attacks and Israeli officials say Egyptian security forces are acting on the latest threats. An estimated 30-thousand Israelis were expected to visit the Sinai, this year, during the holiday season. (Signed)
