미국 남부해안을 강타할 것으로 우려되는 태풍 리타는 세력이 계속 약해지고 있지만 여전히 매우 위험하며, 현재 텍사스와 루이지애나 해안으로 향하고 있다고 기상 전문가들은 밝혔습니다.
현재 뉴올리안스에서는 제방에 물이 밀어닥치면서 태풍 카트리나 피해복구 작업에 한창인 이 도시를 또다시 물에 잠기게 만들고 있습니다.
태풍 리타는 24일 새벽 육지에 상륙할 것으로 예상되며, 최대 6미터 높이의 파도를 불러일으킬 수 있다고 국립기상관측소는 말했습니다.
관측소는 현재 텍사스주 갈베스톤에서 동남쪽으로 3백 킬로 거리에 있는 리타의 평균 풍속은 시간당 거의 2백킬로미터에 이른다고 밝혔습니다. 하지만 리타는 23일 강도 4의 태풍에서 강도 3으로 한 단계 낮춰졌습니다.
한편 리타의 영향권에 있는 지역주민 수만명이 이동하고 있는 가운데 이들을 태운 버스 한 대가 달라스시 외곽에서 산소탱크 폭발로 인해 화염에 휩싸이면서 노인 24명이 사망했습니다.
부시 대통령은 23일 텍사스와 콜로라도를 방문해 태풍 대비상황을 점검할 예정입니다.

Forecasters say Hurricane Rita continues to weaken but remains a very dangerous storm headed for the Texas-Louisiana coast.
Meanwhile, water is rushing over a levee in New Orleans, causing new flooding in the city still recovering from Hurricane Katrina.
The National Weather Service says Hurricane Rita is expected to make landfall early Saturday, and could cause coastal storm surge flooding of up to six meters.
It says the hurricane, about 300 kilometers southeast of Galveston, Texas, is packing winds near 200 kilometers per hour. It was downgraded today from a Category Four hurricane to a Category Three.
Tens of thousands of people are fleeing the path of the storm.
Officials say as many as 24 elderly evacuees were killed after their bus caught fire outside Dallas and was quickly engulfed in flames, apparently fueled by exploding oxygen tanks.
President Bush today visits Texas and a U.S. military command post in Colorado to assess storm preparations.
