U.S. and British planes carrying equipment to aid rescue operations to save seven Russian sailors stranded undersea aboard a small military submarine have landed in far eastern Russia.

The two planes transporting robotic undersea vehicles and underwater rescue teams arrived early today (Saturday) on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula. Japan also is sending rescue equipment to the scene, but it is not expected to arrive until at least Monday.

Russian officials now say the mini-sub became trapped in an undersea antenna 190 meters deep in Beryozovaya Bay. The officials initially said the vessel was ensnared Thursday by a discarded fishing net.

Naval officials say there may only be enough air left in the small submarine to last one more day. Officials have been in contact with the crew, and say the men are in satisfactory condition.

Meanwhile, the Russian navy is trying to tow the 13 and one-half meter long vessel to shallower water for easier rescue.

Russian officials were quick to request international help in their rescue effort after strong criticism five years ago for taking so long to ask for help when the Kursk submarine sank in the Barents Sea. All 118 crew members were killed in that incident.
