The United States and five Asia-Pacific nations have unveiled a new partnership they say will lead to cleaner energy technologies and reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming.

Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea, and the United States -- which together produce about half of the world's greenhouse gases -- today (Thursday) announced the Asia-Pacific Partnership for Clean Development and Climate.

A ministerial meeting to work out programs for the pact will be held in Australia in November.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick told reporters at an annual Asia-Pacific security conference in Laos that the agreement is meant to be a complement, not an alternative, to the Kyoto Protocol.

Neither Australia nor the United States has signed the Kyoto Protocol because it does not mandate emission reduction targets for developing countries.
