조지 부쉬 대통령은 18일 백악관에서 인도의 만모산 싱 총리와 회담한 뒤, 미국과 인도의 관계가 지금보다 더 강력한 적이 결코 없었다고 말하고 있습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 테러 대책과 경제 문제들에 촛점을 맞춘 회담을 마치고 싱 총리와 함께 기자들 앞에 나타나 이같이 말했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 미국과 인도가 희망찬 미래로 나아가는 길로서의 민주주의에 대한 신념을 공유하고있다고 말했으며, 싱 총리는 국제 테러리즘과의 싸움을 주도하고있는 부쉬 대통령의 지도력과 인도의 급속한 경제 성장을 위한 부쉬 대통령의 지원에 감사했습니다.
두 지도자는 또, 민간 핵 에너지가 전 세계의 에너지 필요성을 충족시키는데 긴요한 것이라고 말했습니다. 미국과 인도 양국은 한 협정에서 “핵 융합 과학의 평화적인 응용과, 관련 연구 주제들을 논의할지도 모른다고 말했습니다.
싱 총리는 이번 미국 방문에 앞서 인도의 민간 핵 에너지 계획을 위해 미국 기술에 접근하는 방안을 모색할 것이라고 말했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 또한 인도와 미국이 지난 해 12월 아시아의 여러 곳을 황폐화시킨 쓰나미와 같은 천재 지변을 다루기 위한 “재난 대응 이니시아티브”를 전개할 것 이라고 말했습니다.

President Bush says US-Indian relations have never been stronger, as he hosts a day of meetings with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The two leaders addressed reporters at the White House today (Monday) after talks that focused on counter-terrorism and economic issues.
Mr. Bush said the United States and India share a belief in democracy as a path to a hopeful future, while Mr.Singh thanked the president for his leadership in fighting terrorism and his support of India's rapid economic growth.
Both men said civilian nuclear energy is vital to meeting global energy needs. In an agreement, the countries said they may discuss "peaceful applications of fusion science" and related research topics.
