아프가니스탄은 오는 9월 국회의원 선거를 준비하는 가운데 전국에서 불법무기를 제거하는 운동을 시작했습니다.
아프가니스탄 관리들은 11일 현재 아프가니스탄 내에는 1,800여개의 비정부 무장단체들이 있다고 말했습니다. 이 무기 제거운동은 앞으로 3년 정도 계속될 것으로 보입니다.
이번의 불법무기 제거운동은 지난 2003년 아프가니스탄의 하미드 카르자이 대통령에 의해 시작된 대대적인 무장해제운동에 뒤이어 나온 것입니다. 이 운동은 아프가니스탄내의 10여만명의 무장세력들을 무장해제시키기 위한 것입니다.
한편, 카불을 방문중인 파키스탄의 아프타브 셰르파오 내무장관은 11일 파키스탄이 아프가니스탄의 국회의원 선거기간중 아프가니스탄이 평화를 유지할 수 있도록 지원할 것이라고 말했습니다.
세르파오 장관은 파키스탄은 공격하기 위해 파키스탄과 아프가니스탄의 긴 국경선을 넘으려고 하는 무장세력들을 단속할 것이라고 말했습니다.

Afghanistan has launched a new campaign to rid the country of illegal weapons, as the government prepares for parliamentary elections in September.
Afghan officials today (Saturday) said the campaign is the latest phase of a massive disarmament drive launched in 2003 by Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai. That campaign was aimed at demobilizing about 100-thousand militiamen.
Officials say this latest phase, which is expected to last up to three years, will focus on collecting weapons from the remaining 18-hundred non-governmental armed groups.
Meanwhile, in Kabul, Pakistan's visiting Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao today (Saturday) announced that his country will help Afghanistan maintain peace during its parliamentary elections. He said Islamabad plans to clamp down on militants who try to cross the country's long border with Afghanistan to launch attacks.
The announcement follows a recent request by Afghan officials for help in securing the elections.
