프랑스와 네덜란드의 유럽연합 헌법 부결에 따른 파장을 수습하기 위해 게르하르트 슈뢰더 독일 총리와 자크 시라크 프랑스 대통령이 4일 베를린에서 긴급 정상회담을 가졌습니다.
두 정상들은 프랑스와 네덜란드가 이 헌법을 부결시켰지만, 유럽연합 헌법 비준절차를 계속해 나갈 것을 촉구했습니다.
이날 정상회담은 오는 6월 16, 17일에 브뤼셀에서 열리는 유럽 정상회담을 준비하는 가운데 이루어졌습니다.
그동안 시라크 대통령과 슈뢰더 총리는 유럽연합의 강력한 지지세력이었지만, 최근 프랑스와 네덜란드의 유럽헌법 부결로 지위가 약화되고 있습니다.
지난 5월 28일의 유럽헌법 부결에 따른 사태를 수습하기 위해 시라크 대통령은 서둘러 개각을 단행한바 있습니다.

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and French President Jacques Chirac are scheduled to meet today (Saturday) to discuss the crisis surrounding the European Union's constitution.
Both leaders have called for the ratification process to continue, despite votes in France and the Netherlands earlier this week rejecting the constitution.
Saturday's meeting in Berlin comes as EU leaders prepare to meet in Brussels on June 16-17.
Mr. Chirac and Mr. Schroeder have been close allies in the European Union, but both have been weakened in recent weeks. Sunday's referendum defeat prompted Mr. Chirac to reshuffle his government.
Germany's upper house of parliament ratified the EU constitution last week, but Mr. Schroeder's ruling party suffered a critical state election loss, prompting him to call national elections for this fall, one year early.
