I was at Crate & Barrel, an American chain store specializing in housewares, furniture, and home accessories to buy my newlywed friends some kitchenware.
제가 얼마전 미국의 유명한 생활 용품 가게인 Crate & Barrel에 갓 결혼한 친구에게 줄 선물을 사려고 갔었는데요, 그곳에서 일하는 Tony와 나눈 대화내용을 먼저 들어보시겠습니다.
Let’s listen to a conversation I had with Tony, the sales associate from Crater & Barrel, who was ringing me up at the register. Listen carefully!

Store Manager: Hi stranger!
Tony: Hi! I’m back!
Jen: Were you gone for a while?
Tony: Yes. I usually work just twice a month.
Jen: That’s why she said “Hi stranger!”
Tony: Why isn’t this working!
Jen: You know what, don’t worry about it too much. We’ll let it go. If she doesn’t like it, she doesn’t like it.
Tony: Ok. And she’ll be able to return it without the gift receipt.
The store manager came walking by the register and when she saw Tony, she said “Hi stranger!”. I found out that Tony only works twice a month so that’s why they store manager said that to Tony. 제가 친구에게 줄 선물을 고른 뒤 계산대에서 돈을 내고 있었는데요, 지나가던 가게 매니저 그러니까 지배인이 계산대 직원인 Tony에게 ‘Hi, Stranger~’라고 말했습니다. 그러니까, Tony,가 Hi! I’m back! 이라고 대답했죠.
그래서 제가 Were you gone for a while? 오랫동안 어디에 갔었나봐요? 라고 말했더니, Tony는 I usually work just twice a month, 한 달에 두번만 일한다고 말했습니다.
So I said, That’s why she said “Hi stranger,” 즉 그래서 매니저가 Tony에게 ‘Hi stranger’라고 말한거군요, 라는 뜻이죠.
오늘의 영어 표현은 ‘Hi, stranger’인데요, In America, when someone says “Hi/hello stranger” it means you want to say it has been a long time you met that person.미국에서는 누군가를 정말 오래간만에 봤을 때, ‘너 정말 오랜만이다’는 의미로 “Hello, stranger”라고 인사를 합니다.
Stranger, S T R A N G E R 는 낯선 사람, 모르는 사람이라는 뜻이 있는데요, 정말 모르는 사람이어서, Hello, stranger, 라고 하는 것이 아니라, 얼굴을 잊어버릴 정도로 오랫 동안 못봤다는 의미로, 그래서 정말 오랜만이네! 라는 의미로 이 Hello, stranger 라고 하는 거죠.
It’s the same as saying “long time no see”, “What have you been up to?", "Why haven't I seen you?", or "Welcome back!"
Hello, stranger, 는 정말 오랜 만이다! 라는 의미의 long time no see, 나 What have you been up to? 그동안 어떻게 지냈니? Why haven’t I seen you? Welcome back! 같은 표현과 바꿔 쓸 수도 있습니다.
Also, we often say to someone that we don't see enough, "don't be a stranger"--meaning, please keep in touch, come visit more often, etc.또 얼굴을 잘 보지 못하는 사람, 연락이 뜸한 사람에게 ‘Don’t be a stranger’라는 말도 많이 하는데요, 연락좀 하고 지내자, 자주 좀 보자는 의미로 말할 때 이 don’t be a stranger, 라고 표현합니다.
