척 헤이글 미국 국방장관은 오노데라 이쓰노리 일본 방위상으로부터 북한의 위협에 대한 일본 정부의 인식을 확인했다고 밝혔습니다.
[녹취: 척 헤이글 국방장관] “Minister Onodera made clear, as well as we have been told by the Japanese government, that North Korea's nuclear threats, missile threats, are still a threat to all of us. And that doesn't change. And we're in absolute agreement on that point, and we'll continue to work together, as we are with the Republic of Korea.”
헤이글 장관은 11일 워싱턴 DC에서 오도네라 방위상과 회담 뒤 가진 공동 기자회견에서 오도네라 방위상이 북한 핵과 미사일이 여전히 위협이라는 점을 분명히 밝혔다고 전했습니다.
그러면서 북한의 위협이 바뀌지 않았다는 데 전적으로 공감했고, 한국과 마찬가지로 일본과도 지속적으로 협력할 것이라고 말했습니다.
헤이글 장관의 이 같은 발언은 북한의 일본인 납북자 재조사 착수를 계기로 일본이 대북 제재 조치 일부를 해제키로 한 데 대한 미국의 입장을 설명하는 과정에서 나왔습니다.
헤이글 장관은 오도네라 방위상과 이 문제에 대해 대화를 나눴고, 일본인들에게는 인도주의와 결부된 사안이라는 점을 이해한다고 말했습니다.
[녹취: 척 헤이글 국방장관] “Minister Onodera and I did talk about this issue, and he explained to me, as he and his government have explained this situation and actions taken to our government, as he has explained, and we are aware, the Japanese government has lifted some of the unilateral sanctions against North Korea. We understand that there are humanitarian issues involved for the Japanese people.”
오노데라 방위상도 이번 회동에서 헤이글 장관에게 납치자 현안과 관련해 최근 진행된 북-일 협상에 대해 충분히 설명했다고 소개했습니다.
또 북한의 탄도 미사일 발사와 관련한 일본의 입장도 전달했다고 덧붙였습니다.
