BOB: Certainly! Grab the car keys and I’ll be out in a minute.

CAT: Seat belt is on, mirrors and seat adjusted --- I think I’m ready, dad.

BOB: Nope! Not quite yet! Silly! Turn on the engine first and release the handbrake.

• Driver’s license test: 운전 면허 시험
미국에서 운전 면허를 따려면 필기 시험과 주행 시험을 통과해야 하는데요, 필기 시험, written test 라고 하고요, 주행 시험은 Driving test 또는 Road test 라고 합니다.

B: Usually the examiner rides with you and checks whether or not you can drive safely and obey the traffic laws.
보통 시험 감독관이 운전자와 함께 타서 운전자가 안전하게 운전을 하는지, 교통 규칙은 잘 지키는 지 확인하죠.
The test lasts about 20 minutes and it consists of basic maneuvers you will encounter while driving such as left and right turns, stops at stop signs, lane changes and so on.
시험은 약 20분 동안 이뤄지는 데요, 감독관은 운전자가 좌회전, 우회전은 제대로 하는지, 멈춰야 할 곳에서는 멈추는지, 차선 이동은 제대로 하는지 등을 판단해서 시험 통과 여부를 결정하게 되죠.

• Adjust : ~을 맞추다, 조절하다
Ex) 운전하기 전에 반드시 의자 높낮이를 조절하세요!
- Please adjust your seat before you drive!

넥타이를 고쳐 매야 겠어요, 삐뚤어 졌네요.
- You need to adjust your tie, it’s crooked

• Turn on : ~을 켜다
Turn on the engine : 자동차 시동을 켜세요 (= Start the engine)
↔ Turn off the engine : 시동을 끄세요.

• Hand brake: 차가 움직이지 않도록 차를 정차 시켜 놓거나 주차를 할 때 사용하는 브레이크 (= Emergency brake)
핸드브레이크를 올리다 : Put on the hand brake
↔ Release the hand brake
