(=Your sleeves are too long. You need to have alterations done.)

• I would like to get my pants hemmed.
=Can you hem these pants?
= Can you shorten these pants for me?

‘Hem’ 은 명사로 ‘(옷 등의) 단’을 의미하고요, 동사로 ‘단을 만들다’는 뜻이 있는데요, ‘I like to get my pants hemmed’ 말 그대로하면 바지에 단을 좀 만들어 주세요, 라는 말입니다. 바지 길이가 길 때 단을 접어서 짧게 만들잖아요, 그래서 ‘I like to get my pants hemmed’ 하면 ‘바지 기장을 줄여달라’는 뜻이죠!

Can you hem these pants?

Can you lengthen these pants?’ / I’d like to get my pants lengthened.

할 때는‘옷을 줄이다, 짧게 하다’는 뜻의 동사 ‘Shorten’, S H O R T E N을 이용해서 ‘Can you shorten this skirt?’ 또는 ‘I would like to have this skirt shortened.’

이외에 또 ‘I’d like to get my skirt shortened.’ ‘Can you bring this skirt up a bit?’

Can you shorten this skirt?
= I would like to have this skirt shortened.
= I’d like to get this skirt hemmed.
= I’d like to get my skirt shortened.
= Can you bring this skirt up a bit?

마찬가지로 동사 ‘shorten’을 이용해서 ‘I would like to shorten this blouse’s sleeves’ 또는 ‘Could you shorten the sleeves on this blouse?’

• Also, the waist line is a little bit loose, so please take it in a little.

‘Loose’는 ‘헐렁 헐렁한, 느슨한’ 이란 뜻인데요, 그래서 ‘the waist line is a little bit loose’는 ‘허리 부분이 느슨해요’ 라는 뜻이죠.

정확한 표현은 ‘Please take it in a little 또는 Please take in the waist a little’이라는 것 꼭 기억해 두세요!

이외에 또 ‘I need to have the waist taken in!’

영어로는 ‘The waist is so tight, so please let it out!’

Take in ↔ let out

I need to have the waist taken in. ↔ I need to have the waist let out.
Please take in the waist a little. ↔ Please let out the waist a little.

It is freezing outside. You’d better put on your jacket.

Why don’t you put on your hat?
(=Why don’t you wear your hat?)

It is pouring outside. You’d better put on your rain boots.
(=It is pouring outside. You’d better wear your rain boots.)

This perfume smells terrific! Why don’t you put this perfume on?
(=This perfume smells terrific! Why don’t you wear this perfume?)

Put on 반대로 ~ (무엇 무엇을) 벗다는 영어로 ‘take off’로 나타낼 수 있는데요, 그래서 ‘집에 들어 오기 전에 신발을 벗어 주세요’ 영어로는 ‘Please take your shoes off before you come in my house.’

라고 부탁하는데요, 영어로는 ‘Would you mind taking off your shoes, please?’

• Your pants will be ready in two days.

영어로 ‘When will it be ready?’ 또는 ‘When can I pick it up?’, When can I get it (them) back?

When will it be ready?
= When can I pick it up?
= When can I get it (them) back?

‘How soon can you do that?’

• That’s a quick turnaround! Thanks! I’ll be back on Friday.
‘Turnaround’는 ‘the time it takes to receive something after you’ve given it to them’ 즉 ‘무엇인가를 처리하는데 걸리는 시간, 즉 처리 시간’ 이란 뜻이 있습니다. 그래서 ‘That’s a quick turnaround!’
