Kyrgyz Parliament Accepts Akayev's Resignation - 2005-04-11

Kyrgyzstan's parliament has accepted ousted President Askar Akayev's resignation and set July 10 as the date for a presidential election.

Lawmakers voted on the issues today (Monday) after four special parliamentary sessions in the past week trying to decide whether to impeach the president.

Mr. Akayev formally tendered his resignation to a parliamentary delegation one week ago at the Kyrgyz embassy in Moscow. He fled to Russia after protesters ransacked his offices in Bishkek and the opposition seized power on March 24.

In another development, the Kyrgyz Supreme Court has cleared prominent opposition leader Felix Kulov of all corruption charges leveled by the Akayev government. Today's court ruling paves the way for Mr. Kulov to run for president.

He maintains the charges against him were politically motivated.
