Taiwan President Calls for Massive Protest Against Anti-Secession Bill - 2005-03-12

Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian has called for a massive demonstration to protest China's proposed anti-secession bill.

In his first public comments on the legislation since Beijing unveiled the details last week, Mr. Chen said today (Saturday) the bill will increase tension in the Taiwan Strait.

The president called for one million people to take to the streets on March 26th to join a protest organized by his pro-independence Democratic Progressive party.

China's parliament is expected to pass the anti-secession bill on Monday, which would allow military action if Taiwan moves toward independence.

China views self-ruled Taiwan as a rogue province that must be brought back into the fold, by force if necessary.
