토고는 서아프리카국가 경제공동체, 약칭 ECOWAS로부터 회원자격 정지처분을 받았습니다. ECOWAS 회원국 대사들은 토고의 수도 로메로부터 본국으로 소환됐습니다. 서아프리카 국가 경제공동체, ECOWAS는 토고 지도자들에 대한 여행금지와 무기금수 등을 포함해 토고 정부에 대해 제재조치를 취했습니다.
토고 군부가 포르 나싱베를 부친인 나싱베 아야데마 사후에 대통령에 앉힘에 따라 ECOWA는 이 같은 제재 조치를 취했습니다. 아야데마는 1967년 토고 군부를 통해 집권한 권위주의적인 통치자였습니다. 지난 1990년대초에 제정된 형식적인 다당제 선거를 무시하고 토고 정부는 아야데마 대통령의 [토고인민대회]에 의해 통치되었습니다. 토고 정부는 민주화 요구를 무시했습니다.
고 아야데마 대통령 아들의 집권은 토고 헌법을 유린하면서 이루어졌습니다. 2만여명의 시민들이 나싱베의 하야를 요구하며 로메 거리에서 항의시위를 벌였습니다. 아프리카연합도 포르 나싱베의 위헌적인 대통령 계승을 비난하고, 52개 회원국을 가진 이 기구의 활동에 대한 토고의 참여를 금지했습니다.
토고 정부는 평화롭고 신속하게 자유롭고 공정한 선거를 실시해야 할 것이라고 아담 에얼리 미 국무부 부대변인은 말합니다.
토고의 대통령 승계방식은 미국뿐아니라 우선 적으로 아프리카 지역 국가들에게 우려의 대상이 되고 있다고 에얼리대변인은 강조했습니다.
조지 부쉬 미국 대통령은 “성공적인 사회는 국가의 권력과 군부의 권한을 제한해 정부가 소수 엘리트의 의사가 아닌 일반 국민의 의사에 따르도록 한다”고 말합니다. 토고 국민은 자유롭고 공정한 선거를 치룰 자격이 있습니다.

Voice: Togo has been suspended from ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States. Ambassadors from ECOWAS member states have been recalled from Lom? Togo's capital. ECOWAS imposed sanctions on the government, including a travel ban on Togo's leaders and an arms embargo.
ECOWAS acted in response to Togo's military placing Faure Gnassingbe in power the day after the death of his father, President Gnassingbe Eyadema (PRON.: nah-SING-bay a-yah-DAY-mah). President Eyadema was an authoritarian ruler installed by the Togolese military in 1967. Despite the facade of multiparty elections instituted in the early 1990s, the government continued to be dominated by President Eyadema's Rally of the Togolese People. The government has resisted demands for democratization.
The installation of President Eyadema's son was accomplished through a blatant manipulation of Togo's constitution. More than twenty-thousand protestors took to the streets of Lom?demanding that Mr. Gnassingbe step down. The African Union has also condemned Faure Gnassingbe's unconstitutional succession, and banned Togo's government from participating in the fifty-two member group's activities.
U.S. State Department spokesman Adam Ereli says Togo's government should "move peacefully and rapidly towards free and fair elections":

President George W. Bush says, "Successful societies limit the power of the state and the power of the military -- so that governments respond to the will of the people, and not the will of an elite." The people of Togo deserve free and fair elections.
