Protesters Demand Full Democracy in Hong Kong - 2005-01-23

At least 2,000 people marched through the streets of Hong Kong today (Sunday) to demand more democracy and social justice from China.

The demonstrators carried banners and chanted for direct elections in 2007 and 2008 -- the years in which Hong Kong is due to get a new leader and legislature.

Only half of Hong Kong's 60 lawmakers were elected in the previous vote, while special interest groups chose the rest. Leader Tung Chee-hwa was picked by an 800-member committee loyal to China.

Beijing has rejected quick democratic reform for Hong Kong.
