Exit Polls: Incumbent Has Overwhelming Lead in Croatia's President Run-off  - 2005-01-16

Exit polls show Croatian President Stipe Mesic with an overwhelming lead in today's (Sunday) run-off election, and headed to a second five-year term .

Two exit polls, released as voting ended, gave the incumbent an edge of more than 40 percentage points over Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor.

In the first round two weeks ago, Mr. Mesic led Ms. Jadranka by nearly 30 points, but came up short of an outright victory.

Mr. Mesic had the backing of the center-left opposition, while Ms. Kosor was supported by the ruling conservative Croatian Democratic Union. A victory by Mr. Mesic will deprive the ruling party from total political control.

Preliminary results are expected to be announced early Monday.
