미국의 빌 클린턴 및 조지 H.W. 부쉬 전 대통령들이 인도양에서 발생한 지진 해일 참사 피해자들을 돕기 위한 지원금 모금 운동을 이끌게 됩니다.
강진으로 인해 발생한 해일은 태국과 스리랑카, 인도네시아 그밖의 다른 인도양 국가들의 일부 지역들을 완전 침수시키고 지금까지 15만 5천명의 사망자가 난 것으로 집계되었습니다.
조지 부쉬 미국 대통령은 클린턴 및 현 부쉬대통령의 부친인 조지 H.W. 부쉬 등 두 전직 대통령들이 미 국민과 미국 기업들로 하여금 지진 해일 참사 지역들을 위한 국제 구호 지원을 계속하도록 고무할 것이라고 말했습니다.
지난 달 지진 해일이 남아시아 일대를 강타한 이후 구호 및 재건을 위해 민간인들의 기부금은 수백만 달러에 이르고 있고 적십자나 적신월, 구세군, 카톨릭 구호단체, Save the Children, Care, 유엔아동기금 즉 유니세프 그밖의 America Cares와 같은 국제 구호 단체들은 신속한 대응했고, 또 이들은 세계 전역에서, 막대한 구호금이 답지하고 있는 것으로 전했다고 부쉬 대통령은 말했습니다.
미국의 대규모 구호 노력은 계속되고 있습니다. 미 국제개발처 (UAID)와 미군은 태국과 인도네시아,스리랑카, 몰디브 등지에 식수와 식량, 잠자리를 위한 플라스틱용구 등 많은 물자들이 포함된 긴급 인도 지원을 제공하고 있습니다.
미군 수송기들과 선박들은 지진 해일 피해 지역에 구호 물자들을 실어 나르고 있습니다. 현재 인도네시아의 반다 아체에 정박 중인 미 항공 모함 에이브라함 링컨 호에서 이륙한 시호크 헬기들은 4만 2천 킬로그램 이상의 구호 물자들을 피해 지역들에 공수하고 있습니다.
조지 부쉬 미국 대통령은 지진 해일 피해자들을 돕기 위한 구호 노력에 있어 미국이 계속 중추적 역할을 담당할 것이라고 말했습니다.
미국은 모든 군 자산을 동원할 결의로 있으며 일차적인 구호금으로 3억 5천만 달러를 지원하기로 약속했다고 부쉬 대통령은 말했습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 미국은 또한 광범위한 국제적 대응노력에 발마추기 위해 유엔이나 각국 정부들과도 공동 협력하고 있으며 미군 정찰기 및 수송기들이 여러 날에 걸쳐 피해 지역들을 조사하고 구호 물자들을 전달하고 있고 공군 C-130 수송기들은 하루 24시간 쉬지 않고 구호 임무를 위해 비행하는 가운데 현재 피해 지역들에서 미 군용기들과 군사 요원들의 구호 노력도 계속되고 있다고 말했습니다.
일부 지역들에서는 복구작업에 수 년이 걸릴 수도 있겠지만 미국은 그 과정 전반에 적극 참여해 도울 것입니다. 부쉬 대통령은 미국인들이 이 참혹한 비극의 희생자들을 마음 속에 서 추모하고 또 그들을 위해 기도하고 있다고 말하고 지금의 현대사회에서도 여전히 전 세계는 서로 간의 온정과 관용, 그리고 너그러움을 필요로 한다는 점을 우리 모두 유념하자고 호소했습니다.

Former U.S. presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush will lead a fund-raising effort for survivors of the Asian tsunamis. The earthquake-induced tidal waves inundated parts of Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and other Indian Ocean countries, killing some one-hundred-fifty-five thousand people.
President George W. Bush said the two ex-presidents will encourage individual Americans and businesses to continue to support international aid to the devastated areas:
"In the weeks since the tsunami struck, private citizens have contributed millions of dollars for disaster relief and reconstruction. Organizations like the Red Cross and the Red Crescent, the Salvation Army, Catholic Relief Services, Save the Children, CARE, UNICEF, and America Cares responded rapidly after the tsunamis hit. They have reported an outpouring of generosity from around the world."
A massive U.S. relief operation continues. The U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. military are providing emergency humanitarian assistance including water, food, plastic sheeting for shelter, and other supplies in Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. U.S. military transport planes and ships are ferrying supplies to the battered region. The aircraft carrier U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln is stationed off Banda Aceh, Indonesia, with a fleet of Sea Hawk helicopters flying in more than forty-two thousand kilograms of supplies.
The U.S, said President Bush, will continue to play a leading role in relief efforts:
"Our nation has committed military assets and made an initial commitment of three-hundred-fifty million dollars for disaster relief. We're working with the United Nations and with governments around the world to coordinate the comprehensive international response. American military assets in the region are now aiding recovery efforts. Patrol and cargo aircraft have been surveying damage and delivering supplies for several days. Air Force C-130s are flying aid missions twenty-four hours a day."
In some places, it will take years to rebuild, but every step of the way, the U.S. will be there to help. "We hold the victims of this terrible tragedy in our hearts and prayers," said President Bush. "Let us be mindful that even in this modern age, our world still requires compassion, tolerance and generosity from each of us."
