Palestinian Barghouti Said to Withdraw Candidacy  - 2004-12-12

A Palestinian uprising leader, Marwan Barghouti, who is imprisoned in Israel, has withdrawn his candidacy from next month's elections to replace the late Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat.

Barghouti's campaign manager announced the withdrawal today (Sunday), and said the jailed Palestinian will support rival candidate Mahmoud Abbas, who is running as the candidate of the mainstream Palestinian faction Fatah.

Last week, Barghouti was reported ready to quit if Mr. Abbas supported his list of demands, which reportedly include that Israel stop its targeted killings of militants and release Palestinian prisoners.

Israel sentenced Bargouti to five life terms after convicting him of planning a series of suicide bombings.
