Japan Lawmakers Urge North Korea Sanctions Over Abductions - 2004-12-10

Japanese lawmakers have passed a resolution urging the government to consider sanctions against North Korea for its failure to investigate the fate of Japanese kidnapping victims.

A parliamentary panel on the abduction issue passed the non-binding resolution, which also called on Tokyo to consider suspending all food and humanitarian aid to the Stalinist state.

The resolution's passage comes days after Japan determined that two sets of remains that North Korea claimed belonged to Japanese citizens kidnapped by Pyongyang decades ago were not those of the missing people.

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has said Tokyo will continue to use both dialogue and pressure to get more information about eight kidnap victims North Korea says have died, as well as two more who are missing.
