housands Protest in Kiev as Ukraine Opposition Charges Election Fraud - 2004-11-02

More than 2,000 protesters have gathered in downtown Kiev, after Ukrainian opposition leaders accused government officials of massive cheating in Sunday's heated presidential elections.

The demonstrators, mostly students, accused authorities of election fraud and demanded that they quickly and accurately publish Sunday's vote count.

Meanwhile, opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko told lawmakers the results of the race were rigged and that opposition candidate Viktor Yushchenko was victorious in the first round of voting.

However, Ukraine's Central Elections Commission today (Tuesday) said that with 97 percent of the votes counted, Mr. Yushchenko trails Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych by less than one percentage point, but both won less than 40 percent support.

A runoff is expected November 21st.
