Baghdad Gunmen Kill Iraqi Official - 2004-11-01

Gunmen in Baghdad have killed the deputy governor of the Iraqi capital.

The official was assassinated and two of his bodyguards were wounded during a drive-by shooting in the south of the city today (Monday).

West of Baghdad, in Ramadi, hospital officials say at least two people have been killed during clashes between U.S. forces and insurgents. News agencies say one of the victims was an Iraqi freelance cameraman (Dhia Najim) who was taking pictures of the fighting.

Meanwhile, U.S. artillery has shelled suspected insurgent positions in Fallujah after U.S. warplanes bombed targets in the city late Sunday.

Also today, Iraqi officials kicked off a national voter-registration campaign for national elections due in January.
