Bush: "Nothing Specific" to Indicate Pre-Election Attack - 2004-10-24

President Bush says terrorists have a "general intent" to disrupt the U.S. elections, but that there is "nothing specific" to indicate a coming attack.

The president made the comments in an interview with the Fox News Channel recorded on Saturday for broadcast on Monday.

Mr. Bush said terrorists have thought about whether or not they can disrupt the November 2nd vote. But he said the government has no intelligence it can act on.

His comments come as U.S. intelligence and counter-terrorism officials back away from earlier warnings that al-Qaida was planning a pre-election attack.

The Washington Post and The New York Times newspapers both quote officials who say a key informant on al-Qaida was recently discredited.

The officials warn that al-Qaida is still intent on attacking the United States.
