러시아 남부, 노스 오세티아공화국, 베슬란 마을의 한 학교에서 숨진, 절반 이상이 어린이들인 3백여명의 희생자들을 친척들이 매장하는 가운데 러시아는 이틀간의 국가 애도기간을 가졌습니다.
학교 시설은 과거 수세기동안 러시아 정부군에 대항해 싸워온 체첸 회교 분리주의자들과 연계된 것이 분명해 보이는 테러분자들에 의해 점거 됐습니다. 베슬란은 북 코카사스지역에 위치한 러시아 북오세티아 공화국내에 위치해 있습니다.
지난 9월 1일, 개학식이 거행되고 있던 학교 건물에 30여명의 테러분자들이 뛰어들어 이 학교 건물을 점거했습니다. 테러분자들은 천여명의 인질들을 억류하고 체체냐의 독립을 요구하며 인질들에게 식량과 식수를 제공하지 못하도록 가로막았습니다. 뉴스 보도에 따르면, 납치범들은 일부 인질들이 도망치려고 하자 폭탄을 터뜨려 결국 대부분의 납치범들을 살해한 러시아 특수부대의 공격을 야기했습니다.
미국의 조지 부쉬 대통령은 인질 납치를 야만적인 행동이라고 비난했습니다.
“이것은 테러분자들이 문명세계를 위협하게 될 것임을 연상시키는 무서운 사태입니다. 우리는 무고하게 목숨을 잃은 희생자들을 애도합니다. 우리는 러시아 국민을 지지합니다. 우리는 엄청난 비극을 당한 러시아 국민을 위해 기도합니다. ”
학생들을 희생시킨 것은 체첸 분리주의자들이 개입된 가장 최근의 테러 행동입니다. 지난 8월에 두대의 러시아 여객기가 두명의 체첸여성 자살폭탄 공격자들에 의해 폭파 추락됐습니다. 그리고 사람들로 붐비는 모스크바의 지하철역 부근에서 한 여성 자살폭탄 공격자가 폭탄을 터뜨려 적어도 열명이 살해되고 여러명이 부상했습니다.
부쉬 대통령은 “어떤 명분도 테러를 정당화할 수는 없다”면서 “테러분자들은 체체냐를 포함해 혼란과 파괴를 확산하는 곳은 어디서든지 응징을 받아 마땅하다”고 말했습니다.

Russia has observed a two-day national period of mourning as relatives bury more than three hundred victims, nearly half of them children, who were murdered at a school in the town of Beslan. The facility was seized by terrorists, apparently associated with Chechen Islamic separatists who have been fighting against Russian government troops for most of the past decade. Beslan is in the Russian Republic of North Ossetia, located in the North Caucasus region.
The school was seized on September 1st, when more than thirty terrorists rushed into the building during a ceremony to mark the first day of classes. The terrorists held more than one-thousand hostages. They demanded independence for Chechnya and refused to let their hostages have access to food and water. According to news reports, the captors may have set off explosives when some hostages tried to escape, triggering a raid by Russian security forces that killed most of the gunmen.
"This is yet another grim reminder of the lengths to which terrorists will go to threaten the civilized world. We mourn the innocent lives that have been lost. We stand with the people of Russia. We send them our prayers in this terrible situation."
The killing of school children is the latest terrorist act involving Chechen separatists. In August, two Russian airliners were blown up by two female Chechen suicide bombers. And in Moscow, at least ten people were killed and many more wounded near a busy subway station where police say a female suicide bomber set off explosives.
"No cause justifies terror," says President Bush. "Terrorists must be opposed wherever they spread chaos and destruction, including Chechnya."
