북대서양조약기구, 나토의 26개 회원국 지도자들은 이라크 과도 정부를 지원하기로 합의했습니다. 나토가 이라크의 군사 훈련을 지원할 것이라는 발표는 터키 이스탄불에서 열린 나토 정상 회의에서 나왔습니다. 이라크 과도 정부의 이야드 알라위 총리는 나토의 지원을 계속 요청해 왔었습니다.
야프 드 후프 셰퍼 나토 사무 총장은 이라크 보안군 훈련 지원을 수행하기 위한 세부 사항은 아직 나오지 않았다고 말했습니다.
“이 훈련이 어떻게 수행될런지의 결정은 나토가 아닌 이라크 정부 만이 내릴 수 있는 문제이기 때문에 수행 방안에 관해 나는 아직 모르고 있습니다.”
조지 부쉬 미국 대통령은 이라크 인들을 돕기로 한 나토의 결정은 이라크 과도 정부가 국제 지지를 얻고 있음을 보여준다고 말했습니다.
“미국과 미국의 동맹국들은 이라크 인들이 자국을 수호할 준비를 갖추도록 돕고 있습니다. 우리는 또한 이라크 보안군 훈련을 지원해 달라는 알라위 총리의 요청을 승인하기로 한 나토의 결정에 대해서도 감사하고 있습니다. 우리는 이라크 인들이 국내 기간 시설을 재건할 수 있도록 돕고 있으며 이라크는 자유 선거 실시를 위해 계속 추진해 나갈 것입니다.”
부쉬 대통령은 이라크에서 진전을 이루기 위한 노력들이 외국 테러분자들이나 과거 사담 후세인 정권 잔당들에 의해 방해를 받고 있다고 말합니다.
“테러 분자들은 문명 사회의 정신과 공약을 무너뜨리지 못하는 한, 패배에 직면하고 있다는 사실을 압니다. 문명 사회는 테러 분자들을 두려워하거나 테러분자들에 의해 위협받지 않을 것입니다. 이라크의 새 지도자들은 자신들의 입장을 분명히 밝혀왔습니다. 알라위 총리는 최근 저항 분자들이 이라크를 파괴하려 노력하고 있으며 이라크 지도부는 이를 허용치 않을 것이라고 말했습니다.”
이라크 인들은 미 군정 당국으로 부터 이양받은 주권을 수호하기 위해 싸울 태세를 갖추고 있습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 미국 주도의 연합군은 이라크 인들의 그같은 정신을 존중하고 있기 때문에 이라크 인들은 결코 고립되지 않을 것이라고 강조했습니다.

The leaders of the twenty-six member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, NATO, have agreed to help Iraq's interim government. At a summit in Istanbul, Turkey, it was announced that NATO will assist in training the Iraqi army. Iyad Allawi, Iraq's interim prime minister, had asked for NATO's assistance.
Jaap de Hoop Scheffer , NATO's secretary-general, says that the details have yet to be worked out:
"How this training is going to be worked out, I do not know yet, because...it is the Iraqi government, and only the Iraqi government who's going to decide finally what's going to happen, and not a NATO capital or NATO as such." (END ACT)
NATO's decision to help the Iraqi people, says President George W. Bush, is an example of Iraq's interim government gaining international support:
"The United States and our coalition partners are helping prepare Iraqis for the defense of their country, and we appreciate NATO's decision to approve Prime Minister Allawi's request for assistance in training Iraqi security forces. We're helping Iraqis rebuild their country's infrastructure, and Iraq will continue moving toward free elections." (END ACT)
President Bush says Iraq's efforts to make progress are being attacked by foreign terrorists and thugs of the former regime of Saddam Hussein:
"The terrorists know they face defeat unless they break the spirit and commitment of the civilized world. The civilized world will not be frightened or intimidated. And Iraq's new leaders have made their position clear. Prime Minister Allawi recently said that 'the insurgents are trying to destroy our country, and we're not going to allow this'."
The Iraqi people are prepared to fight in defense of their sovereignty. President Bush says the U.S.-led coalition "respects that spirit and the Iraqi people will not stand alone."
