5월 31일은 자유를 위해 목숨을 바친 미국인들을 기리기 위한 메모리얼 데이 즉 미국의 현충일입니다. 1775년 이래 미국인들은 프랑스의 진흙 밭에서 부터 한국의 꽁꽁 얼어붙은 언덕에 이르기까지 세계 수많은 곳에서 자유의 적들과 싸워 왔습니다. 미국의 조지 부쉬 대통령은 자유를 위한 미국의 노력은 여전히 시험대에 올라있다고 말했습니다.
아프가니스탄을 해방시킨지 2년이 지났지만 미군은 계속 위험에 직면해 있다고 부쉬 대통령은 말했습니다. 부쉬 대통령은 연합군이 탈레반과 알-카에다 잔당들을 궤멸시키기 위한 적극 공세에 앞장서고 있고 아프가니스탄의 새로운 군 병력이 자국을 안정시키기 위한 노력에 일조하고 있는 가운데 아프가니스탄은 계속 도전에 직면하고 있긴 하지만 이제 탈레반 정권의 악몽에서 벗어난 사회가 됐다고 말했습니다.

전 역사를 통해 미국인들은 굽히지 않고 목적을 잘 이루어 왔습니다. 60년 전에 미군 병력 수십만 명은 영국군 및 다른 나라들의 군 병력과 함께 사상 가장 어렵고 위험한 한 군사 작전을 준비했습니다. 1944년 6월 6일 이들 연합군은 나치 독일이 점령하고 있던 프랑스 노르망디 해안에 상륙하기 시작했습니다. 이들 연합군이 나치 독일과 독일의 추축국인 일본 제국 그리고 이탈리아를 전면 패배시킴으로써 1945년 제 2차 세계 대전은 막을 내렸습니다.

Today [Monday, May 31st] is Memorial Day in the United States -- a time when Americans honor those of their countrymen who have given their lives for freedom. Since 1775, Americans have fought the enemies of freedom in many places -- from the muddy fields of France to the frozen hills of Korea. President George W Bush says America's commitment is still being tested: "Two years after we liberated Afghanistan, our troops continue to face danger. Our coalition is leading aggressive raids to rout out surviving members of the Taleban and al-Qaida. The new Afghan army is adding to the stability of that country. Afghanistan still has challenges but that nation is a world away from the nightmare of the Taleban."
More than a year after a U.S.-led coalition drove Saddam Hussein from power, Americans continue to serve in Iraq. President Bush says terrorists there are trying to stop the emergence of democracy:
"These elements of Saddam's repressive regime and secret police have reorganized, rearmed, and adopted sophisticated terrorist tactics. . . . They hope to wear out the patience of Americans, our coalition, and Iraqis before the arrival of effective self-government and before Iraqis have the capability to defend their freedom."
Throughout their history, Americans have persevered. Sixty years ago, hundreds of thousands of Americans, together with troops from Britain and many other nations, were preparing for one of the most difficult and dangerous military operations in history. On June 6th, 1944, the allied landing in Nazi-German occupied France began. The Second World War would end in 1945 with the total defeat of Nazi Germany and its Axis partners -- Fascist Italy and Imperial Japan.
Today, the U.S. and its allies face a new threat. President Bush said, "our terrorist enemies have a vision that guides and explains all their varied acts of murder. They seek to impose Taleban-like rule country by country across the greater Middle East." Americans, their friends and allies, said Mr. Bush, "will persevere and defeat this enemy and hold this hard-won ground for the realm of liberty."
