미국의 조지 부쉬 대통령은 미국과 중국간의 협력과 교역 증진을 논의하기 위해 최근 워싱턴을 방문한 중국의 원자바오 총리를 환대했습니다.
부쉬 대통령이 밝힌 바와 같이, 원자바오 총리의 방문 기간중 양국 지도자들은 “한반도의 안정과 평화” 모색”등 많은 현안들에 관해 논의했습니다.
“북한의 핵무기 계획 폐기는 한반도의 안정과 평화에 필수적입니다. 이것을 실현하기 위해서는 북한 주변국가들의 긴밀한 협력이 요구되고 있습니다. 본인은 미국이 이 문제의 평화로운 해결에 좀 더 근접할 수 있도록 중국이 6자회담을 주최하는 주도적 역할을 해준 데 대해 감사하게 생각하고 있습니다.”
부쉬 대통령은 또한 양국간의 중요한 경제적 유대와 관련해서 “중국의 급속한 경제 성장은 우리 시대의 놀랄만한 위업중의 하나”라고 지적했습니다.
“중국은 경제적 자유가 국가의 부를 가져온다는 사실을 알게 되었습니다. 중국의 경제적 자유의 성장은 결국 중국에서 사회적 정치적 종교적 자유도 동시에 성장될 것으로 기대하는 단초를 제공하고 있습니다. 이같은 자유들은 국가의 위대함과 국민의 존엄성에 필수불가결한 요소입니다.”
부쉬 대통령은 미국과 중국의 관계는 “훌륭하고 강력하다”라고 말하면서 양국의 견해 차이에 대해 정직해질 수 있을 것이라고 지적했습니다.
"우리 양국은 그동안 공동의 이해관계가 걸린 문제에 대해 건설적으로 협력해왔기 때문에 우리의 입장차이에 대해 솔직합니다. 양국 관계는 강화되고 성숙되었기 때문에 상호이해와 존중의 정신으로 양국간의 경제 문제와 타이완, 티베트문제나 인권문제와 종교등 제반 현안을 논의할 수 있을 것입니다.”
부쉬 대통령은 “중국은 위대한 문명국이며, 강대국이고, 위대한 국가”라고 말했습니다. 그리고 미국은 “양국이 세계 지도국가들로서 걸맞는 역할을 수행할 수 있도록” 중국과의 협력을 증진하는 한편, 솔직하고 건설적이며, 협조적인 관계 구축을 기대하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.

President Bush George W. Bush hosted Premier Wen Jiabao of China December 9th in Washington in a visit that reflected increasing ties of cooperation and commerce between the United States and China.
During the visit, the leaders discussed many issues, including, as President Bush said, seeking "a Korean peninsula that is stable and at peace":
"The elimination of North Korea's nuclear program is essential to this outcome. Realizing this vision will require the strong cooperation of all North Korea's neighbors. I am grateful for China's leadership in hosting the six-party talks which are bring us closer to a peaceful resolution of this issue."
Discussing our important economic ties, President Bush noted, "The rapid rise of China's economy is one of the great achievements of our time":
"China has discovered that economic freedom leads to national wealth. The growth of economic freedom in China provides reason to hope that social, political and religious freedoms will grow there, as well, in the long run. These freedoms are indivisible and essential to national greatness and national dignity."
Reflecting a relationship that is "good and strong," Mr. Bush also pointed out that we can be honest about our differences.
"As our two nations work constructively across areas of common interest, we are candid about our disagreements. The growing strength and maturity of our relationship allows us to discuss our differences, whether over economic issues, Taiwan, Tibet, or human rights and religious freedom, in a spirit of mutual understanding and respect."
"China is a great civilization, a great power, and a great nation," said President Bush. And the U.S. looks forward to working with China and building a relationship that is candid, constructive and cooperative as it "increasingly takes its place among the leading nations of the world."
