Pope Benedict has ushered in the New Year with an appeal for solidarity in fighting endemic poverty made worse by the global financial crisis.
The pontiff, in the traditional New Year's papal prayer for peace, urged world leaders to examine the financial meltdown in detail, and to avoid quick fixes to systemic problems.
Addressing pilgrims in St. Peter's Square, the pope quoted a biblical passage that says Jesus would not recommend putting "a few new patches on an old garment." He said the crisis should be a test case for the future of globalization.
Earlier in St. Peter's Basilica, Benedict called poverty a threat to peace across much of the globe. He asked if developed countries are ready to make deep revisions in the development model used to support poor states.
