Israel has canceled plans to allow deliveries of supplies to the Gaza Strip after Hamas fighters bombarded southern Israel with mortars and rockets.
Israel had intended to open border crossings and allow humanitarian aid and commercial goods to enter the Gaza Strip today (Wednesday) out of respect for a 24-hour cease-fire with the Palestinian Hamas militant group.
But Israel canceled the plans after Hamas attacked the Jewish state today (Wednesday) in retaliation for the killing of three militants by the Israeli army Tuesday.
The unrest ended a period of calm Hamas had agreed to at the suggestion of Egyptian mediators. Hamas suggested Tuesday that it could consider extending a cease-fire that expired last week.
Israel has threatened a major military campaign in Gaza if Hamas continues to attack the Jewish state. However, Hamas and Israeli officials say they want to avoid that.
