마이크 멀린 미군 합참의장은 20일 늘어나는 무장단체 탈레반의 공격에 대처하기 위해 내년에 아프가니스탄 주둔 미군의 수를 두 배로 늘릴 수 있다고 말했습니다.
아프가니스탄을 방문한 멀린 의장은 이 날 카불에서 기자들에게 최대 3만 명의 추가 병력이 내년 중순까지 아프가니스탄에 도착할 것이라며 이같이 말했습니다.
현재 아프가니스탄 주둔 미군은 3만1천여 명입니다. 멀린 의장은 추가 파병 인력은 대부분 아프가니스탄 남부로 파견될 것이라고 말했습니다. 이 지역은 탈레반 무장세력의 활동이 왕성하고 폭력 사태가 늘고 있습니다.
멀린 의장은 아프가니스탄 주둔 미군 추가 병력은 이라크 주둔 군과 비슷해 질 것이라며, 미군 측은 이라크 주둔 군의 숫자를 줄이려 한다고 말했습니다.
멀린 의장은 아프가니스탄 내 군 주둔이 성공적이 되기 위해 개발과 효율적 통치를 위해 더 많은 일을 해야 한다고 말했습니다.

The top U.S. military officer says the United States may double the number of troops deployed in Afghanistan next year to deal with a growing Taliban insurgency.
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, told reporters in Kabul on Saturday that up to 30-thousand additional troops could arrive by the middle of 2009.
The U.S. currently has 31-thousand troops serving in Afghanistan.
Mullen said most of the reinforcements will go to southern Afghanistan, where the Taliban militants are most active and violence is on the rise.
He said an increased U.S. deployment in Afghanistan would be directly tied to force levels in Iraq, as U.S. military officials look to reduce troop levels in that country.
Mullen also said more must be done to promote development and effective governance in Afghanistan for the troop build-up to be successful.
