Tensions are high in and around the Gaza Strip today (Friday), after the Palestinian militant group Hamas declared its six-month cease-fire with Israel is over.
Islamic Jihad says it launched three rockets into southern Israel. Security sources reported Gaza militants firing at a farm worker just outside the territory. No casualties were reported in either incident.
Hamas says it has no plans to renew the ceasefire, which expired early today.
A member of the group's military wing (Abu Obeida) says Palestinian factions blame Israel for breaking the truce. Israel says it wants the cease-fire to continue, but insists on a total end to Palestinian rocket fire, which continued despite the truce.
Russia's Foreign Ministry expressed "great concern" over Hamas's decision and urged the group to reconsider.
