유엔의 세계식량계획, WFP는 인류를 굶주림에서 탈피시키고자 하는 이른바 '인류 구제안 (Human Rescue Package)'을 위해 50억 달러 이상이 필요하다고 호소했습니다.
세계식량계획의 호세테 쉬란 사무총장은 16일 전 세계 가장 많은 사람들이 굶주림을 겪고 있는 인도의 수도 뉴델리에서 성명을 발표하고 이 같이 호소했습니다.
쉬란 사무총장은 긴급 자금 지원이 없으면 아프리카와 아이티 그리고 기타 다른 지역에서 수백만 명이 오는 3월까지 식량을 공급받지 못하게 될 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
WFP가 지원 우선 대상국으로 정한 12개 국가 들에는 북한이 포함되며, 그 가운데 8개 국가가 에디오피아, 수단, 짐바브웨 등 아프리카 국가들입니다.
쉬란 사무총장은 미국 정부가 금융 구제안과 경기 부양책으로 책정해 놓은 금액의 단 1%만으로도 세계식량계획의 지원 계획을 전면 충당할 수 있을 것이라고 말했습니다.
유엔 세계식량계획 WFP가 내년도 식량 지원 활동을 위한 국제사회의 원조를 거듭 호소하고 나섰습니다.

The United Nations' World Food Program is appealing for more than five-billion dollars for what it is calling a "human rescue package."
WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran issued the appeal today (Tuesday) from New Delhi, India -- the nation with the world's largest population of undernourished people.
She says that without a rapid injection of funds, tens of millions of people in Africa, Haiti and other "hunger hot spots" will be without food aid by March.
Eight of the WFP's 12 priority nations for hunger assistance are in Africa -- including Ethiopia, Sudan and Zimbabwe.
Sheeran says a mere one percent of all the money set aside by the U.S. government for financial bailout and economic stimulus packages could fully fund the work of the WFP.
