기독교자유연합은 로라 부시 여사가 버마 난민 지원을 주창해 온 공로를 인정해 이같이 결정했다고 밝혔습니다.
부시 여사는 이 단체 웹사이트에 게재된 동영상 소감을 통해 수상에 감사를 표하고 열악한 버마 인권에 대한 국제사회의 환기를 촉구했습니다.
기독교자유연합은 또한 부시 여사가 버마 정부의 폭정 중단을 촉구해 온 점을 높이 평가했습니다.
A U.S.-based Christian group has awarded First Lady Laura Bush its 2008 Freedom Award in recognition of what it says are her efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Burma.
Christian Freedom International says it presented Mrs. Bush with the award because of her efforts as an outspoken advocate for Burma's hundreds of thousands of displaced refugees.
In an acceptance video posted on the Christian Freedom International Web site, Mrs. Bush thanked the group and said that the crisis in Burma is in need of the international community's support and attention.
The group also praised the first lady for her consistent calls to the Burmese government to end internal violence that has torn apart the country for five decades.
