티베트의 정신적 지도자 달라이 라마는 어제 유럽의회 의원들을 상대로 한 연설에서, 티베트는 자치권을 얻기 위해 중국에 대항하고 있는 것이 아니라 후진타오 중국 국가주석의 정책 목표인 조화로운 사회를 추구해 중국을 돕고자 한다고 말했습니다.
벨기에의 수도 브뤼셀을 방문한 달라이 라마는 진정한 조화는 신뢰와 상호존중을 통해서만 가능하다면서, 공포와 총으로 단합을 도모하려는 것은 이치에 맞지 않다고 지적했습니다.
달라이 라마는 또 유럽연합이 중국과 긴밀한 관계를 유지하는 것이 중요하기는 하지만 중국의 잘못 역시 지적해야 한다며 유럽연합측의 지지를 요청했습니다.
The Dalai Lama told members of the European Parliament Thursday that Tibet is not working against China in its bid for autonomy, but is trying to help China by promoting a harmonious society -- a policy objective of Chinese President Hu Jintao.
Speaking in Brussels, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader said genuine harmony can only come through trust and mutual respect. He said it is illogical to try to develop unity under fear and a "gun."
The Dalai Lama called on the European Union for support, saying while its important for the group to keep a close relationship with China, it should also make clear China's mistakes.
European Parliament President Hans-Gert Pottering called the Dalai Lama's approach to China an "extraordinary example" of a peaceful and committed campaign for a worth cause. Pottering added that the Parliament has highlighted the human rights of Tibetans while also respecting China's territorial integrity.
