보고서는 또 아프리카에서 홍역 사망자 수가 90%나 감소한 반면, 아시아 지역의 진전은 적었으며, 여전히 가장 많은 사망자가 발생한다고 지적했습니다.
홍역은 어린이와 유아에게 있어서 여전히 가장 놓은 사망 원인이며, 매일 5백여명의 어린이가 홍역으로 사망합니다. 특히 보건 체계가 빈약한 빈곤국에서 유행하고 있습니다.

Global health authorities say the death toll from measles has declined dramatically worldwide over the past decade.
Health organizations said today (Thursday) that a concerted international vaccination effort slashed the number of measles deaths by 74 percent -- from an estimated 750-thousand eight years ago to 197-thousand last year.
They say the most dramatic decline -- about 90 percent -- was noted in Africa. The least progress was seen in Asia, where most measles deaths now occur.
Measles is a leading cause of death among young children, and still kills about 500 children each day. The infectious disease is prevalent in poor countries with weak health systems, notably in sub-Saharan Africa.
The World Health Organization, the American Red Cross and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are among the organizations participating in the vaccination project.
