The top executives of the so-called "Big Three" U.S. automakers are preparing to make their case to Congress for government loans to help keep their struggling companies out of bankruptcy.
The CEO's of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler are appealing for up to 34-billion dollars in government loans to pay for expenses and to restructure their businesses. Chrysler and G.M. warn that they might not survive past January without government help.
U.S. President-elect Barack Obama, who takes office in January, supports a bailout of the industry, but said today (Wednesday) that the companies must first present a viable long-term business plan.
The companies have submitted business plans to Congress that include a number of cost-cutting measures such as job cuts, a reduction in executive pay and other concessions. They will answer questions from lawmakers at hearings Thursday and Friday.
Meanwhile, leaders of the main autoworkers' union (the United Auto Workers) are holding an emergency meeting today in (the north central U.S. city of) Detroit. Union officials say they will look at making new concessions in their contracts to help keep the car companies in business.
