조지 부시 미국 대통령은 앞으로 금융 제도의 보호를 위해 씨티그룹에 구제금융을 제공한 것과 같은 조치들을 더 취할 수 있을 것이라고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 24일 기자들과 만나, 바락 오바마 대통령 당선자와 구제 조치에 대해 대화했으며, 앞으로도 모든 중요한 결정들을 알려줄 것이라고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 워싱턴에서 헨리 폴슨 재무장관과 회동 후 이같이 말했습니다.
미국 정부는 23일, 씨티그룹의 부실 대출금과 주택담보증권에 대해 최대 3천 60억 달러까지 지급보증을 해주겠다고 합의했습니다.
미국 정부는 또 지난주 주가가 60% 폭락한 씨티그룹 정상화를 위해 2백억 달러를 지원하기로 했습니다. 그 대가로 정부는 씨티그룹에 지분을 보유하게 됩니다.
씨티그룹은 100여국 이상에서 영업하고 있습니다. 금융 전문가들은 씨티그룹의 붕괴는 이미 침체된 세계 경제에 심각한 손상을 입힐 것이라고 말했습니다.
U.S. President George Bush says the government could make more decisions like the bailout of banking giant Citigroup, to safeguard the financial system in the future.
Mr. Bush told reporters today (Monday) he spoke with President-elect Barack Obama about the Citigroup rescue plan and said he will keep the incoming leader informed of any big decisions.
Mr. Bush spoke after meeting Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson in Washington.
The U.S. government agreed Sunday to guarantee 306 billion dollars worth of Citigroup's risky loans and assets.
The rescue plan also gives Citigroup another 20 billion dollars to stabilize the company after its stocks lost 60 percent of their value last week week. (The cash injection will come from the 700 billion-dollar financial package approved by Congress.)
In return, the government will get a stake in the company.
Citigroup has operations in more than 100 countries. Financial analysts had warned its collapse would seriously hurt the already crippled global economy.
