Share prices are falling again on many world stock markets, as investors consider new evidence the global financial crisis is getting worse.

Japan's Nikkei index lost nearly seven percent today (Thursday), Hong Kong's key index fell four percent, and major European stock indexes were all sharply lower in afternoon trading. U.S. stock indexes were mixed in midday trading.

Some economists say stocks are falling in part because investors are worried about possible deflation as energy and consumer prices fall in the United States and other nations. A sustained fall in prices could slow the already-faltering economy if consumers put off purchases in the hope of getting a better deal in the future.

Oil prices fell below 50 dollars a barrel on key markets in London and New York. It is the lowest New York price since early last year.

A new report from the U.S. Labor Department says the number of people signing up for unemployment compensation hit a 16-year high last week. Federal Reserve experts have predicted that the job situation will worsen next year, with the unemployment rate rising above seven percent.
