The United States has opened a new consulate in China, a move U.S. diplomats say is part of a shift toward America's "new front lines of diplomacy."
The diplomatic office is in China's central industrial city of Wuhan. It is the fifth U.S consulate to be established on the Chinese mainland.
The U.S. Embassy in Beijing says opening the consulate in Wuhan is part of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's larger efforts to shift personnel away from Europe to where they are most needed.
The new consul-general in Wuhan, Wendy Lyle, says the office will focus largely on building economic ties with China.
Lyle says there are nearly 500 U.S. companies operating in Wuhan's home province of Hubei.
