야프 데 후프 스헤페르 북대서양조약기구, 나토 사무총장은 아프가니스탄이 테러범들의 온상지가 되지 않도록 미군 증파가 필요하다고 강조했습니다.
스헤페르 총장은 18일 스페인에서 열린 나토 의원연맹 총회에서 이같이 밝히고 바락 오바마 미국 대통령 당선자가 아프간에 미군증파를 공약한 것을 환영한다고 말했습니다.
스헤페르 총장은 그러나 미군 증파로는 부족하며 나토 회원국들이 아프간의 군사, 경제, 민간 부문 개발을 위해 더 많은 노력을 기울여 달라고 당부했습니다.
한편 아프간 동부 4개 지역에서 나토 군을 이끌고 있는 존 스피스처 미군 대령은 나토 군과 아프간 군이 국경 지역에서 파키스탄 군과 합동 작전을 개시하기로 했다고 밝혔습니다.

NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has called for more non-U.S. troops in Afghanistan, to prevent it from becoming a terrorist "safe haven."
De Hoop Scheffer told the NATO Parliamentary Assembly in Spain Tuesday that he welcomes U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's commitment to boost troop levels.
He added, however, that increasing U.S. troop levels is "not enough," and that all NATO allies need to make greater efforts for the military, economic and civilian development of Afghanistan.
Also Tuesday, U.S. Colonel John Spiszer, who leads NATO troops in four eastern Afghan provinces, said NATO and Afghan forces have launched a border cooperation effort with the Pakistani military.
Spiszer said the operation is aimed at putting pressure on militants on both sides of the border.
